An Eco - Friendly Guide: Paint Edition

Updated: Jul 14, 2021

Flatlay composition on wooden table. Flatlay includes orange and green fabric swatches along with lighter orange paint swatches. Also in the picture is a paintbrush, Farrow & Ball Colour Card and three large Oranges in the centre of the composition. All of this is spread across a dark blue wallpaper sample.

Transforming your space should be exciting and positive and painting is one of the best ways to do this however, did you know the paint brand you gravitate towards for a room makeover might not be eco-friendly? So the question is: what makes a paint harmful to the environment? Volatile Organic Compounds. If you’re not immediately aware of what VOC’s are, don’t worry, most people aren’t. To put it simply, VOC’S are compounds that easily become gases or vapours, and these are often given off when painting the walls as well as continuing to release chemicals in the air over the duration that the paint is on the wall. When VOC’s react with oxygen, they can ‘form ‘bad’ ozone in the presence of sunlight’, (pollutionissues.co.uk) which means they are a direct contributing factor to global warming. Luckily, many paint brands have had a turn around in recent years and took priority in making and selling environmentally friendly paint to avoid these issues so, with this selection of eco-friendly paint brands, you can ease your mind and paint your spaces with no negative impact to the environment.
