Colours of Optimism

Updated: Aug 9, 2021

Bouncing off of the WGSN + Coloro Key Colours of AW 21/22, these are the colours to look out for to update your interiors.

Following a year of uncertainty and rapid change in the way we live our daily lives, the trends reflecting the consumer needs of A/W 21/22 are more dire than ever. With people seeking comfort in their own personal spaces in response to becoming extremely familiar with being isolated within our homes, unwelcomely or not, how we use, create and transform space will be more essential than ever for the design of the future. Nostalgia will play a big part in finding a balance of comfort and familiarity within ambiguity, and the WGSN x Coloro Key Colours are the perfect example of how design can achieve this. The digital world has become a lot more prevalent and utilised within the last year – admittedly a lot sooner than initially predicted. This means finding colours and tones that work well in a physical format as well as a digital one has been a top priority. The digital world is rapidly advancing and becoming a key factor of daily life and exploring ways to incorporate that into interior spaces, is just as crucial. With palettes focused on Digital Fantasy and Grounded Nostalgia this trend feature will show you how to incorporate the trends of A/W 21/22 into your interiors perfectly.

The WGSN + Coloro Palettes were created in response to consumer needs and feature a wide range of remarkable colours. The Digital Fantasy palette, hugely popularised due to the ever-evolving interest in technology and everything related to the such, mirrors the drama and escapism of the digital world with it reflecting colours used in e-games and fantasy worlds. Tones range from immersive darks to artificial brights opposing the tones in the Grounded Nostalgia Palette. Grounded Nostalgia’s colours draw on the appeal of nostalgia and nature and combined, this creates a palette with authentic and relatable colours. This palette touches upon the need for comfort and familiarity during a time of unpredictability. Blues, Greens and pops of soft vibrancy from oranges and purples are emphasised with this palette whilst still grasping onto the nature-like feel.

A.I Aqua

A continued key colour from the S/S 21 edit, A.I Aqua is on the radar. Deriving from inspiration from a bright blue sky, this colour has been given a digital enhancement through its saturation levels and will be a great accent colour for interior spaces. Set to be found on fabrics, accent décor items as well as larger soft furnishings, A.I Aqua is a great way to update classic pieces with a pop of colour.

Dark Springs

With a Rothko-like depth to it, Dark Springs is a perfect way of continuing the need and desire of bringing small and subtle aspects of nature and the outside environment to interior spaces. Tones of black and dark shades have been a core colour and consistent staple over the years with it holding the biggest share of the colour mix and Dark Springs, with its inky green undertone, is an update to this. Reminiscent of soil or peat with an appealing tinge of dampness you can almost smell, this colour is a versatile tone playing into the senses that will show darker at night and greener in the day. Trying this on upholstered furnishings and on walls will be a favoured route to take.

Bloodstone

Bloodstone, a colour inspired by the mineral hematite, works well in spaces such as bedrooms, dining tables and decorative accessories. To work Bloodstone into your interior space to add a touch of comfort and richness, curtains, dining sets and wall hangings will accomplish this

“Electric Magenta is a youthful and invigorating color with an unreal edge – like a computer-generated berry tone. It has an offbeat quality, and yet it is only a few shades away from more typical wintry hues of burgundy and red, giving it an unusual versatility throughout the season, from transitional to cold weather drops.” - ColoroxWGSN

Electric Magenta

Perhaps the most surprising A/W 21/22 colour trend, Electric Magenta, featured in the Digital Fantasy palette alongside A.I Aqua and Dark Springs, put a computer-generated edge on classic winter tones such as berry and burgundy. Whilst it may not seem it at first glance, this colour is extremely relatable to the season because of it only being a few shades away from berry tones. The more vibrant pop of Electric Magenta allows an extended longevity and transseaonal aspect by integrating it through interior accents.

Golden Harvest

A warmer update on beige, Golden Harvest offers a warm infusion of colour trends beige, ecru and yellow. With a calming presence and nostalgic appeal, this colour will be a favourable element to upholstered furniture and soft décor. Inspired by the earthen clay buildings and Sahara landscapes of Morocco, what better way to bring a new scenery into familiar surroundings.
